Classic Campfire Stories: Forty Spooky Tales

by Ashli

Are you looking for a way to improve your storytelling skills? Or maybe you’re itching to spook some youngsters? Classic Campfire Stories: Forty Spooky Tales by William W. Forgey will help you do both!

Classic Campfire Stories: Forty Spooky Tales is available on amazon.com

Classic Campfire Stories contains a collection of tales – some you may be familiar with, from authors like Edgar Allen Poe, Jack London, and Mark Twain. Many of the other stories are written by the book’s author himself. Read the stories aloud to practice your spooky voices, and bring it along on your next camping adventure to tell around the fire.

All stories are complete with a final outline to help you remember the story arc when you are recanting the tales but don’t have the book handy. The stories are family-friendly (spooky, but not too spooky!), and all are great for ages ten and up.

Why we loved this book

My husband is a voiceover artist, and while we were reading this book, he would regale me with a few of these stories each night. As we got further into the book, he got better at suspenseful reading. Every night, I’d experience higher anxiety levels during his storytelling as his voice boomed throughout the house. We giggled at the thought of being able to scare teenagers with some of these stories later. I especially liked ones that end in a bit of a jump scare.

The introductory story, which you can preview on amazon.com, highlights ‘The Golden Arm’ by Mark Twain – a tale precluded with great insights into how to convincingly tell a scary story, and deliver the final scare, from Mark Twain himself.

After reading the book, we just so happened to be around a campfire with friends when someone said they wanted to tell scary stories. My husband and I exchanged a glance, and before long, he was retelling The Golden Arm to a captive audience. As he shouted the last line, startling the person to his right, a camera flashed. Perfect timing.

Author William W. Forget, MD, has written several practical outdoor books, including several wilderness medicine books. A former Boy Scout scoutmaster and experienced outdoorsman, many of these stories are related to being outdoors, which makes them great for telling around the campfire. Young campers will go to bed wondering if the axeman will come to chop wood for them in the middle of the night!
